The Lockheed P‑80 Shooting Star was the United States’ first operational jet fighter. Developed from Lockheed’s earlier L‑133 study, it first flew in January 1944 and entered service late that year. With straight wings and a single fuselage‑mounted engine, it saw limited use in World War II and became a frontline aircraft during the Korean War.
