The Lockheed XP‑49, also known as Model 522, was a proposed high‑performance fighter that built on the successful P‑38 Lightning platform. Designed to meet the U.S. Army Air Corps' 1939 proposal 39‑775, it aimed to use a powerful 24‑cylinder Pratt & Whitney X‑1800 engine and feature a pressurized cockpit. Although the prototype flew in late 1942, the aircraft never entered production and was ultimately abandoned in favor of improving the existing P‑38.
