Aircraft Overview

History

Boeing launched the 7E7 program in 2004 with All Nippon Airways as launch customer and later renamed it the 787. The first 787 flew on 15 December 2009, FAA and EASA certification followed in August 2011, and ANA began commercial service in October 2011.

Design

The 787 uses a largely composite airframe and is powered by either General Electric GEnx or Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines. Its systems replace many traditional pneumatic functions with electrically powered equipment. Raked wingtips, a flexible wing, and chevrons on the engine nacelles are prominent features.

Variants

The family comprises the 787-8, stretched 787-9, and further-stretched 787-10. The proposed short-range 787-3 was cancelled. The specification table uses representative 787-8 dimensions and range while labeling speed, ceiling, and lifecycle values as family data.

Operations

Airlines use the 787 for long-range point-to-point routes as well as major hub services. In 2013, battery thermal-runaway events led aviation authorities to temporarily ground delivered 787s until Boeing introduced battery-system modifications.
