History

Airbus first proposed an A330-derived A350 in 2004, then adopted a clean-sheet A350 XWB design in 2006 after airlines sought a more ambitious competitor to the Boeing 787. The prototype first flew on 14 June 2013, EASA certification followed in September 2014, and Qatar Airways introduced the A350-900 on 15 January 2015.

Design

The A350 is the first Airbus aircraft built largely from carbon-fibre-reinforced polymers. Its fuselage was designed around a typical nine-abreast economy cabin, and the A350 shares a common pilot type rating with the A330.

Variants

The A350-900 typically carries 300 to 350 passengers and has a published 15,750 km range. The longer A350-1000 typically carries 350 to 410 passengers and has a published maximum range of 16,700 km.

Operations

Qatar Airways was the launch operator for both main variants, introducing the A350-900 in 2015 and the A350-1000 in 2018. The family is used on long-haul passenger routes and competes with Boeing 777 and 787 models.
