History

Airbus launched the A320 program in 1984. The first A320 flew on 22 February 1987 and entered service with Air France in April 1988; later stretches and shrinks created the wider family.

Design

The family pioneered digital fly-by-wire controls and side-sticks in commercial airliners. Current-engine-option aircraft use CFM56 or V2500-family engines, while A320neo-family aircraft use CFM LEAP-1A or Pratt & Whitney PW1000G engines.

Variants

The family consists of the A318, A319, A320, and A321. The re-engined neo family is based on the A319, A320, and A321 and adds more efficient engines and large sharklets.
