History

The first G550 flew on 18 July 2002 and received its FAA type certificate on 14 August 2003. Gulfstream produced over 600 units, delivering the 500th aircraft in May 2015, before ceasing production in July 2021.

Design

The G550 improves on the Gulfstream V with aerodynamic tweaks that add 250 nmi of range and better fuel efficiency. Its MTOW is 500 lb higher, and the cabin is lengthened by moving the entry door forward and adding a seventh window pair. The PlaneView flight deck includes cursor controls, Honeywell Primus Epic avionics, a Rockwell Collins head‑up display, and an Elbit enhanced‑vision system.

Variants

Variants include the G500, a shorter‑range version with reduced fuel capacity; the U.S. military C‑37B VIP and EA‑37B Compass Call electronic‑warfare models; the Israeli CAEW Eitam fitted with the EL/W‑2085 sensor; and the Australian MC‑55A Peregrine SIGINT/ELINT aircraft.
