Aircraft Overview

History

Gulfstream and Grumman began developing the GIV in March 1983 as a re-engined, stretched derivative of the Gulfstream III. The first GIV flew on September 19, 1985, received FAA certification on April 22, 1987, and entered service at serial number 1000 in 1987; the GIV-SP change began at serial number 1214 in 1993.

Design

The GIV uses two Rolls-Royce Tay turbofans and a redesigned wing intended to reduce cruise drag and increase range. The aerodynamic changes increased range by more than 300 nautical miles over the Gulfstream III, and the GIV became the first business jet with an entire glass cockpit.

Variants

The original GIV led to the special-purpose GIV-SP, later G400, and the shorter-range G300. The improved GIV-X became the G450, with the reduced-fuel G350 as a companion model. U.S. military Gulfstream IV versions received C-20F, C-20G, C-20H, and C-20J designations, but not every C-20 submodel represents the original GIV.

Operations

Gulfstream IVs serve private, corporate, charter, government, and military operators. In June 1987, a GIV set 22 class records while flying west around the world in 45 hours 25 minutes; later GIV flights added eastbound and international records.
