Aircraft Overview
History
The original Caravan first flew on 9 December 1982. Cessna developed the four-foot-longer 208B for greater payload and cabin volume; the cargo Super Cargomaster led to the passenger Grand Caravan. The more powerful Grand Caravan EX was certified in December 2012.
Design
The 208B is a high-wing, strut-braced utility aircraft with fixed tricycle landing gear and a Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-114A turboprop. It can use an underslung cargo pod and can be configured for passenger, freight, parachuting, float, or other utility work.
Variants
The 208B Grand Caravan is the stretched passenger model, while the 208B Super Cargomaster is the cargo version. The Grand Caravan EX uses an 867 hp PT6A-140 and has a cited 38 percent improvement in climb rate over earlier versions.
Operations
Operators use the 208B for regional passenger service, freight, humanitarian transport, parachuting, and operations from short or unimproved airfields. Its large cargo door and flexible cabin are central to those roles.
