The Mooney M20J is a four-seat, single-engine member of the Mooney M20 family. The original M20J 201 was introduced for 1977 to replace the M20F and used a 200 hp Lycoming IO-360 engine with aerodynamic changes intended to reduce drag.

History

The M20J was certified on September 27, 1976, and the 201 entered production in 1977. The source records 1,723 M20J 201 aircraft built during 1977-1987 and 1989-1990, a count that includes the 201LM, 201SE, and MSE. Later M20J developments continued through the 1998 Allegro.

Design

Compared with the M20F it replaced, the M20J 201 incorporated a more streamlined cooling arrangement, landing-gear doors that covered the wheel wells, flush access panels, an improved exhaust stack, flap-hinge fairings and gap seals, and a more efficient McCauley propeller. Early aircraft used a 200 hp Lycoming IO-360-A1B6D; the source lists the IO-360-A3B6D from 1978.

Variants

M20J versions in the source include the 201, equipment-simplified 201LM, luxury 201SE, 201AT advanced trainer, aerodynamically revised 205 and 205SE, MSE, and Allegro. The MSE replaced the 201 designation in May 1990, and the final 1998 M20J production was renamed Allegro.
