History

The MD-82 was announced in April 1979 and first flew on 8 January 1981. Republic Airlines received the first aircraft in August 1981.

Design

The MD-82 retains the MD-81’s basic dimensions and two rear-mounted Pratt & Whitney JT8D-200 engines. Increased takeoff weights and engine options provide improved payload and range capability.

Variants

The MD-83 adds greater fuel capacity and operating weights, while the MD-87 uses a shorter fuselage. The reference range here is for an MD-82 carrying 155 passengers.

Operations

American Airlines became a major MD-82 operator. Other users included Alitalia and Northwest Airlines, and MD-82s have also been converted to freighters.
