History

The Global Express was announced in 1991, first flew in 1996, got Canadian type certification in 1998 and entered service in 1999. Development followed Bombardier’s acquisition of Canadair in 1986 and involved a joint‑definition team of 200 engineers from Canadair, Mitsubishi and BMW‑Rolls‑Royce. Production began in 1999 and the program has produced over 600 aircraft.

Design

The Global Express is a high‑speed business jet with a 6,500‑nmi range at Mach 0.80, a 51,000‑ft ceiling and 14‑hour endurance. Its semi‑monocoque airframe uses aluminum alloys and composites, and it has a low wing, tricycle gear and fuselage‑mounted engines. The aircraft features a new T‑tail, a supercritical wing with 35° sweep and winglets, and is powered by two BMW‑Rolls‑Royce BR710 turbofans with FADEC. The cabin holds 12‑16 passengers.

Variants

Variants include the Global 5000 (shorter range), the XRS (improved range and cabin), the Global 6000 (upgraded avionics and wing), and the Global 5500/6500 (higher speed and lower fuel burn). Military versions have been adapted for surveillance, electronic warfare and command roles.

Operations

The Global Express is used by private owners, corporations, charter operators and government agencies. Operators fly 450–600 hours per year, with some fleets exceeding 100 hours monthly. It serves VIP transport, corporate travel and mission‑critical flights worldwide.
