Aircraft Overview

History

The XH-40 prototype first flew on 20 October 1956. Production HU-1 aircraft entered service around 1960, and the designation changed to UH-1 under the unified U.S. military system in 1962.

Design

The classic single-engine Hueys use a two-blade main rotor and were produced in short- and stretched-cabin forms. Numerous mission conversions retained the base airframe while adding rescue, training, electronic-warfare, medical, or armed-support equipment.

Variants

The family includes UH-1A through UH-1H single-engine models, specialized EH, HH, and TH conversions, the twin-engine UH-1N, and the later UH-1Y.

Operations

Hueys served in transport, air assault, medical evacuation, rescue, training, electronic warfare, and armed support, most famously during the Vietnam War.
